Assam tea is a black tea originating from the region of the same name in northwestern India. Rooted in a long tradition, it is harvested from an indigenous variety of tea plant with large leaves called Camellia assamica. Growing in a hot, rainy environment at a very low altitude, close to sea level, it is known among teas for its strength and invigorating properties.
The STGFOP1 grade (for Special Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe of the highest quality) designates an excellent quality tea made from whole leaf terminal buds of the tea plant (Pekoe, from the Xiamen dialect of Chinese "pek-ho" meaning "white flowers," referring to the silky white of the buds) and whole buds that have turned golden after fermentation (Golden Tippies). Orange means "royal," from the name of the Dutch Oranje Nassau dynasty, and designates a harvest of imperial quality.
