Assam tea is a black tea from the region of the same name, in northwest India. Coming from a long tradition, it is harvested from an indigenous variety of tea plant with large leaves called “camellia assamica”. Having the particularity of growing in a hot and rainy environment and at a very low altitude, close to sea level, it is known among teas for being strong and invigorating.
The grade STGFOP1 (for Special Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe of 1st quality) designates an excellent quality tea composed of terminal buds of the tea plant in whole leaves (Pekoe, from the Chinese dialect of Xiamen “pek-ho” meaning “white flowers” , in reference to the silky white of the buds) and whole buds which become golden after fermentation (Golden Tippies). Orange means "royal", named after the Dutch Oranje Nassau dynasty, and denotes an imperial quality picking.
